Mac - A puzzle game with serious graphics
June 3, 2003

Enigmo, the newest game from Pangea, is much more than a puzzle game. The 3D graphics require a pretty up-to-date graphics card. But why? A big part of it is the physics of the drops of water, oil and lava bouncing all around the screen as you try to fill pots with their respective liquids. There is so much going on with these drops as you move and rotate bumpers, sponges and other tools to get the drops where they need to go.

The first 10 levels are challenging enough that you'll definitely want to buy it to see all 70. Read the review at Inside Mac Games and download it from Pangea. You won't be sorry . . . well unless you can't get the drops to go in the pots!

Christian - 'Bruce Almighty' Director Interview
June 2, 2003

The new film starring Jim Carrey is promoted with scenes of many comical things the character Bruce does when God gives him His powers. It sure seemed silly and crude in the commercials. Turns out the director [and writer apparently] is a Christian and the movie tackles some important spiritual issues in the midst of all the fun.

Interviewer: And God deals with Bruce's anger so lovingly, which seemed like one of the major themes of the movie--that Bruce had God wrong all along.

Tom Shadyac: That's right! And God loved Bruce all along, but that soil had to soften before he could see it.

The rest of the interview is at ChristianAnswers.Net.

Tech - Site shows 'A Day In The Life'
May 31, 2003
ADayInTheLife.Org invites photographers from around the world to capture a week in their cities in photos. They've had so many sign up they have had to add a monthly themed section that some of the artists are invited to participate in. You can get a view of life in cities from New York to Warsaw to Sao Paulo. When I get a digital camera I'm going to sign up for Gainesville.
Mac - Tracking product releases
May 28, 2003
Besides having a good round-up of the latest dirt, MacRumors.com also has a Buyer's Guide that keeps track of how long it has been since Apple updated each product. Right now, they rate LCD monitors, xServe, iBook, iPod and eMac as "buys" since they have been recently updated. You can also read the recent rumors about all the hardware products.
Christian - Helping Iraq
May 27, 2003

Controversy continues to brew as evangelical missionaries want to move into Iraq to help with water, food and other necessities. Some critics don't want relief workers to bring help "in Jesus'name". Larry Cox of the Southern Baptist International Mission Board says

Yes, we are unapologetically Christians. But we also are committed to freedom. We believe no one should ever be coerced in matters of faith, either unduly influenced to accept or prevented from exploring a new teaching. In places where other religions dominate, our approach to relief efforts is geared to making information available for those who want it. Ministries are conducted with no strings attached because, after all, that is how God loves us.

Meanwhile, one 100-member church's effort to gather food to send to Iraq through the IMB turned into a community project.

Producers and growers donated about 80 percent of the total food count. Monetary gifts used to purchase additional food brought the total to 12,000 pounds of product.

Check out this report for more on the project.

Tech - Two million more broadband subscribers
May 17, 2003
The fastest way for consumers to get on the Net is through DSL or cable and there are now 19 million of us doing that. CNet.com reports broadband companies have had a record quarter.
Christian - Rise of fundamentalism in Iraq?
May 16, 2003

As celebration of the fall of Saddam has waned, new persecution toward Christians has started from the fundamentalist factions in Iraq. The article on Crosswalk.com says religious tension is high.

Christian women say they've been harassed by Shiite men for walking on the street without head scarves, and priests complain that Shiite clerics inflame religious hatred by calling for the expulsion from Iraq of
" nonbelievers."

Misc - Clark Kent to stay pure
May 10, 2003
According to SciFi.com, the character of Clark Kent on Smallville will remain a virgin for the "forseeable future". Al Gough, executive producer, said, "once you cross that line [of sex], then you forever change the character and the series." On the show, the young Superman is in a love triangle with Chloe and Lana. What will happen past that forseeable future is up for grabs.
Mac - Some Game News
May 10, 2003

The Warcraft 3 Frozen Throne Beta Test progresses including a bunch of tournaments last week. I'm pretty bad against online players so I only play a game or two in each tourney. Most of the balance issues are taken care of but there's still some work to do.

The Unreal Tournament 2003 Demo just came out. If you can meet the rather steep specs requirements, you will have a lot of fun trying out this FPS. There are only a few maps but its so well made, I'll be playing it for a while.

I was just invited to beta test Everquest for Mac and it seems you can still register. I imagine mentioning the War3 beta got me some points in the selection.

Mac - iTunes Music Store = good CCM selection
April 28, 2003

Sure Apple's new music download service is groundbreaking, with its support from the major labels, AAC encoding and ease of use. Sure it's enclosed inside the pretty iTunes wrapper. But does it have a good selection of Christian music?

At first this was hard to determine since the service was getting hammered so heavily few of the pages would load without a "504" error. Tonight, Apple must have added some more servers because the iTunes Music Store now seems to be performing as advertised.

To get to the Christian music, go to the "Inspirational" genre. Most of the songs there are Christian. You can see "new releases", "staff favorites" and "just added" albums.

To get to all the artists, you should use "browse" then choose inspirational. You'll see they have a good number of artists. Here's part of the screen you get if you double-click on Jeremy Camp's album "Stay".

Many of the Christian albums don't get the $9.99 price that the others do. I guess that is due to the smaller market. If we show Apple we want this, perhaps they'll lower the album price. Note: if any album has less than 11 songs the price will be just the price of the songs.

Mac - iTunes 4 impresses
April 28, 2003

Steve Jobs and Apple introduced iTunes 4, the new Music Store inside of it and new iPods today. The announcement may be webcast later.

New, impressive features of version 4 (other than the store, info above) include:

  • Sharing
    • You can share music between two or more iTunes 4 equipped Macs over Rendevous networking. You need to open port 3689 on your firewall, if you have one. As Jobs says, shared songs stream, they are not copied. You still only have the one copy of the song.
    • You can share with other Macs, not accessible through Rendevous, if you know their IP on your network.
    • The screenshot to the right shows a new blue icon for the music stored on my G4 accessible from my iBook.
  • Album Art
    • Find the art on the internet or scan it
    • Drag and drop into the window
    • It will be added to the song info. You need to select the whole album for it to be added to all the songs.
    • In the screenshot my favorite indie band, with 2 friends from church, now has the cover of their CD associated with the songs from that album.

Mac - "If you haven't been asleep the last two weeks"
April 21, 2003

At the annual shareholder meeting, Apple CEO Steve Jobs was asked if a music service was indeed forthcoming from the company. Jobs is quoted in a Rueters article saying "You'd think so if you haven't been asleep the last two weeks." Not exactly a "no comment" but hey, the announcement is only 3 days away.

In another quote from ThinkSecret, Jobs said " 'there will be a time' when Apple would speak about its relationship with Motorola. This was after a question about processor speeds. Though we all know GHz isn't everything, most Mac fans have been upset with the speeds Motorola has been producing and the lack of a G5. Rumors of Apple switching processors and companies abound.

Mac - Music to MY Ears
April 21, 2003

Apple has invited members of the press to an event on April 28 with "announcements that will be music to your ears." MacCentral received one and reported on it today.

Seems some or all of the Apple/Music rumors will be vindicated on Monday! The question now is which ones. New iPods? Music Service? iTunes 4? They bought Universal Music?

iPods, Music Service and iTunes 4 are quite likely as they are very much related. We'll see if Apple will put Universal into the mix and take on the daunting task of revitalizing it.

In this commentary on the Motley Fool website, a commentator seems to be the lone voice of support among financial analysts that sees benefits for Apple and music in general of buying Universal Music.

Christian/Tech - Presidential Prayer Team
April 19, 2003

The Presidential Prayer Team is a non-partisan, non-profit effort to "encourage specific nationwide prayer for the President. The goal is to enlist at least 2.8 million participants, or 1% of the American population, to make this prayer commitment."

Sign up to pray and you'll get regular emails with requests and a window decal.

There's also a site for kids. I'm tempted to go there for updates because it looks cool.

Tech - Iraq Info Minister becomes web "cult star"
April 15, 2003
Silly quotes from the magically disappearing Iraqi Information Minister are the main feature of the welovetheiraqiinformationminister.com site. You'll also enjoy seeing what he would have said if he had been at several of the world's great conflicts. You can even buy a shirt with one of his sayings. The site was originally on a shared server but they got so many hits they had to get a separate machine. Read about that at CNET.
Mac - Rumors galore
April 11, 2003

The L.A. Times is reporting that Apple is in talks to buy Vivendi Universal's music division. Unlike some previous Apple purchase rumors (like say, Palm? LOL) this one make sense as Vivendi has been trying to unload some of its divisions. There were already rumors of Blizzard possibly being up for sale (Apple should buy them! Revenge for Microsoft getting Bungie!) Buying Universal music would be a big boost to the upcoming music download service.

New iPods are apparently on the way too, hopefully by the end of the month, according to ThinkSecret. The site claims they will come with a dock and a revamped design.

Mac - War Reporters use Powerbook and iBook
April 9, 2003
Jack Gruber from USA Today uses a Powerbook G4 connected through a satellite phone in the field to send his reports and photos back to the home office. In this pic, he types under protective plastic to keep sand out of the Powerbook. St. Petersburg Times staff photographer John Pendygraft uses an iBook to communicate back to the U.S. Here's the pic and his weblog.
Tech - Fox News uses my airport names
April 4, 2003 - 12:40 am

Shepard Smith is on the air right now and about two minutes ago he said something to the effect of " We are getting lots of suggestions for new names for Saddam airport. Freedom and Liberty among them." I don't know if I was the only one to send those in (I doubt it) but I did send those two in one email! WOOHOO! It's currently called Baghdad. Anything to get the regime name off of it. Boy, I wish I had the VCR going. Here's the text of the email:

From: Chuck Jacobson <chuckiej@webchuck.net>
Date: Thu Apr 3, 2003 11:54:42 PM US/Eastern
To: foxreport@foxnews.com
Subject: Renaming the Airport
We should name it Freedom International Airport or Liberty International Airport.

BTW, "Shep" is also the anchor who mentioned on the first day of the war that they were hearing that the "target of opportunity" was something President Bush had been praying for. Think about that.

Tech - Marvel dotComics reach surfers
April 2, 2003
Marvel Comics' website sports Flash-based versions of a few of their comic books. New to the dotComics are two special books, one honoring international peacekeepers and one promoting the X-Men sequel. You move through the pages (including the ads) by clicking on them. Check 'em out. 'Nuff said.
Mac - Dying Gateway fights Apple, not big guys
March 29, 2003

It started with the Profile, an attempt to steal the thunder of the flat panel iMac with an inferior computer inside and out. The commercials even made it bend when its plastic "legs" don't bend. The iMac commercial it tried to imitate, though, wasn't out of the realm of the possible. At least all the movements it made are possible.

Now Gateway is launching an ad campaign "Rip, Burn, Respect" imitating the Apple "Rip. Mix. Burn." campaign from a couple years ago. They will promote the two big music download sites (Listen.com and Emusic.com) and their computers. This as Apple tries to get the major record companies on board for its download service which will work through iTunes and probably have AAC encoded songs (higher quality than MP3). It will be incredibly easy for Mac users to download high quality music and listen to it on their Mac and iPod. Gateway will never be able to claim that and these recent moves will likely not prevent good ol' Chapter 11.

Details on MacRumors.

Mac - At Bio-IT World, Macs make waves
March 28, 2003
Macs save money. This is no big news to long-time Apple users but it's a headline when an IT outsourcing company says it. MacCentral reports "Tully [VP of firm] estimates that a company running a Windows-centric server environment will spend about two thirds less time and money managing its IT resources by doing the same things with Mac OS X Server and an Xserve instead." Tully also said "I tell them that we'll [Tully's company] make more money by supporting them in pure Windows environments . . ." Also at the conference, BioTeam, a Bio-IT consulting firm, talked about setting their clients up with Xserve clusters and configuring them in minutes with a Perl script running on an iPod. Here's the details.
Christian - Iraqi Christians face unknowns
March 21, 2003
Numbering less than 400,000, Iraq's Christian community has in recent months become the object of overt discrimination by Islamist elements, Compass Direct reported. The attacks have ranged from verbal abuse and graffiti campaigns to stone-throwing and even brutal assassinations. The article was written hours before the war started; we pray that soon our brethren there will be free and missionaries will be able to enter.
Tech - Fox News beats CNN in wartime ratings
March 21, 2003
Fox News received better ratings on the first day of the war than CNN, the network known for its coverage of Desert Storm. Fox averaged 4.1 million viewers for the full day Thursday, CNN had 3.7 million and MSNBC had 1.6 million, according to Neilsen ratings. "Fox has thrived by presenting a variation on talk radio with its interactive, in-your-face style of broadcasts." Read more about the upset at CBS Marketwatch. Unprecedented video from the frontlines is probably the thing that sets the coverage of this war apart from others. The networks have reporters "embedded" with the armed forces sending back video and reporting what they are allowed to. There are some strict limits so that Iraq does not find out what the forces are doing. Still, the stories they send back via satellite are amazing.
Tech - No more game shows without random #s
March 17, 2003
On September 19, 1983, Michael Larson broke the 6 sequence patterns on the game show "Press Your Luck". This was before the personal computer revolution took hold. The Big Board was run electronically but with these patterns the producers had set up. Larson memorized those patterns and used them meticulously to rack up $110,237 in a show that had to be split into two episodes. The new version, "Whammy" (shown on Game Show Network), uses a 200 MHz PC to run the board completely randomly. The history making show was discussed in detail on a 2 hour special. For more, see the Game Show Network site. Sad thing is, though not surprising, his winnings were not enough to stop him from persuing more get rich quick schemes, which brought the law down on him. He died in 1999 of throat cancer avoiding the feds in Florida.
Tech - Good sound systems a must
March 17, 2003
We have been struggling with an old sound system in our current church building, much of which was "Macgyvered" together. In our new building we are putting significant money and time into getting a good and suitable system. You don't have to get the most expensive electronics, but getting the absolute cheapest will almost certainly doom your sound quality! As we move into the new building around November I'll post about the new equipment and how we plan on using it.
Mac - Warcraft III Expansion Beta tester!
Mach 10, 2003
I just became a late addition to the Warcraft 3 Expansion Beta test. Warcraft 3 is the real time strategy game that features some aspects of role-playing. All of Blizzard's games earn quite a following and "War3" is no exception. Stay tuned for more info as I start testing!
